I’d intended to talk to Bill so he wouldn’t be blindsided on Monday. I’d also intended to discuss Derrick’s concerns and find out if they’re fucking around on my property. Not once did I consider Bill, of all people, might be involved. But the way Elena’s acting, I’m wondering if there’s something going on I should know about. It’s one thing for them to be skimming. It’s another for them to be skimming from me.
Betrayal twists my guts. My prediction to Derrick, about catching people unprepared, might pan out—in the worst possible way. “Then you can show me what you have so far.”
She swallows, giving herself an extra second or two. “Yes, of course.”
It’s too good a chance to let it pass. “Well, what a surprise. You do know how to say something other than no.”
She tightens her lips, and her gaze takes on a sharp edge. “Where would you like to start?” she asks, not rising to the bait.
“I want to see everything you’ve got.” I leave that hanging, knowing it’s like picking up where we left off years ago.
She’ll absolutely hate it.
