ChapterEight
SUNDAY
“Hell’s bells, Sunday, you need to get in bed. You’re sick. You need rest,” Moira snapped as she came back into our room, arms filled with supplies for what I was sure would be more tea for me. She’d practically been pouring her witchy brews down my throat, and with every swallow, I grew fuzzy-headed and sleepy, my dreams more disturbing each time I closed my eyes.
“Moira, it’s been three days,” I whined. “I don’t want to sleep anymore. If I don’t get some fresh air soon, I’m going to lose my mind.”
“You think you’re going to lose your mind? Alek has been checking in every few hours. I finally set a spell on him so he’d go away. He’s a disaster about you being sick.”
“Why haven’t you let him in?”
“Because you’re giving off some serious fuck me vibes when you’re sleeping. The guy can only stay so strong. He might be mad at me when he realizes I wiped his memory of you being sick, but I’ll pay the price.”
“You can do that?”
She winked. “Try me.”
“Then you can magic a way for me to get out of here.”
“Sweetie, you can barely sit up without swaying. I’m not letting you leave this room.”
“Do you really think you can stop me?”
Moira laughed. “A feather could stop you. Hell, a slight breeze could.”
“I’ll be fine. I’m just run down. Your sleeping tea makes me have the weirdest dreams. I don’t like it. I can’t rest when I’m afraid of what I’ll do when I close my eyes.”
Moira’s eyes widened. “Excuse me? Say that again.”
“I’m having funky dreams, witch. And it’s your fault.”
“Sunday, you shouldn’t be dreaming at all. These teas are made to induce healing sleep. You should be out cold.”
“Well... you got the recipe wrong. Turn in your wand and cauldron, your shit’s busted.”
With a little harrumph, she set her ingredients down on the counter and shook her head. “Nope. You’re the one who’s busted. What kind of dreams are you having?”
I blushed, a wild and untamed desire unfurling inside my chest. “All kinds. Some good, but some... scary.”
“Is your mother visiting you again?”
“Again implies she stopped. She still comes to me every night.”
“What does she say?”
“Keep going. I’m almost there. They’re coming for me. Yadda yadda yadda. Embrace my destiny.” I waved my hand. “The usual BS.”
She chewed on her thumbnail, a show of anxiety I hadn’t seen from her before. “Who are they?”
I threw my hands up in the air, almost unbalancing myself.Dammit. Moira was right.I was weak as shit.
“I saw that.”
“Hush, witch.”
“So, who are they?”
“You think I know? She never tells me anything specific. It’s all cryptic nonsense to me.”
