ChapterForty-Two
SUNDAY
“You’re pregnant.”
My world stopped. I stared at Kingston, heart in my throat as an earth-shaking clap of thunder filled the air. Fat drops of rain fell from the sky, now pitch-black with clouds.
“No, I’m not. I took a test.Twotests.”
“You suspected, and you didn’t tell me?”
Crap.I bit down on my lip. “Um... yes? But they came back negative, so there really wasn’t any point.”
“What the fuck, Sunday?”
“Well, I didn’t want to freak anyone out until I knew for sure. And it was only because I was having these mood swings and hadn’t got my period and you know the creepy dreams.”
“What dreams?” he growled.
Shit, this was really turning against me.
“Sunday. What. Fucking. Dreams?”
“I can’t talk about them right now. I promise I’ll tell you, but... not right now.” Tears swam in my eyes. I wasn’t really a crier... until recently. It all made sense now. I’d been hormonal. Kingston had filled me with his wolfy spawn. My belly lurched. Or Noah. Or Alek.
Then nausea took hold, stronger than it had over the last few weeks. I ran for the bushes, rain soaking my skin as I fell to my knees and waited to empty the contents of my stomach.
Caleb.
It could be Caleb’s, and I couldn’t say a damn thing.
Kingston ran his warm palm down my spine, soothing me as shudders racked my body.
“Shit. Sorry, Sunshine. I didn’t mean to upset you. I don’t, fuck, I don’t know what to do.”
“I don’t know either. I did everything I was supposed to do. I took the suppressants. She said they would also act as birth control.”
“They’re supposed to,” he confirmed. “You know I’ll take care of you, right? Both of you. No kid on this fucking earth will be more loved than our baby.”
I brushed back my hair and looked up at him, hating that I had to give voice to the question but needing his answer.
“What if it’s not yours?”
“No matter what, if it’s part of you, it’s mine.”
Tears clogged my throat. “Kingston.”
“When did you start the suppressants?”
I got to my feet, letting him help me as the two of us walked back to the gazebo. “After the first heat.”
His lips twisted into a smirk. “Well, mystery solved then.” He placed his large warm palm over my lower belly. “Mine. You weren’t on anything when I knotted you.”
Even brimming with tension from his revelation about my pregnancy, I still got turned on instantly when he mentioned that first time I’d ridden his knot.
“But I took a test after that. And another one not long ago. They were both negative.”
“Did you take a human test?”
