“You just told me that, when you stand your ground at a forest fire, your actions aren’t based on what someone else thinks. And yet you didn’t want to have dinner with me because you try to avoid situations that might be misconstrued. I believe those were your exact words. Do you care about other people’s opinions or not?”

Of course she didn’t. She’d never cared what people thought—not about her mother, or her family situation, and especially not about her.

At least, not very much. Okay, maybe she did. Just a little.

“Fighting a forest fire and having dinner with you are hardly the same thing,” she said.

“That’s exactly what I thought,” he said. “And yet I get the feeling the forest fire holds more appeal for you than I do.”

“I don’t know about that. In a lot of ways, you’re alike.” She was less likely to get burned by a forest fire, though. Heat licked through her at the promise in his eyes, proving her right.

He nodded, indicating complete understanding. “It’s the way we both induce an adrenaline rush in you.”

“That’s not at all what I meant. I—”

The bedroom door opened.
