His phone buzzed and as inconspicuously as possible, he glanced to see who’d texted.

Hannah.

Running late and just about to leave. I had a horrifying and informative phone call with someone who knows Wentworth. Fill you in later, and I’ll be there soon.

Unease settled in his gut as he darkened his screen saver again and placed his phone face down on the table.

Stall. Wait for her to get there, so they could tell him together.

“You know,” he began hesitantly. “Maybe you shouldn’t discount your attraction to Tori. There’s clearly something between you guys.”

James gave a harsh laugh. “I’d rather dump a bottle of hot sauce in my eye. That chick drives me crazy and not in a good way.”

Eric lifted a brow. “I don’t know. I mean, you guys keep ending up swapping saliva.”

“Yeah, clearly there’s a part of my body that didn’t get the text that she’s off-limits, but fortunately my brain knows better.”

Eric could only grunt in response, because James’s abhorrence toward Tori was just bizarre. Tori seemed nice enough.

“You need to get back out there. Maybe even just hooking up with someone to blow off steam.”

It was a weird suggestion, but maybe not a bad one. His friend had only ever been with Hannah. Maybe getting laid with no strings was exactly what he needed right now.

“I can’t even think about sex or dating right now. My mind is tapped out on shit for the bar.”

“Fair enough.” Eric grunted. “Well, after you take it, we can go out and get some drinks. Get white-boy wasted.”

James’s guffaw was exactly the response he’d hoped for.

God, how long could he stall? How far out was she?

Eric picked up his phone again, hoping for another text, but there was nothing.

“Waiting on a text?” James asked lightly.

“Ugh, yeah. Sorry.” Eric’s gaze caught on the app Hannah had installed so they could track each other, and a thrill hit his blood.

Of course. Why hadn’t he thought to check this?

He opened it quickly and spotted the little bubble with her picture in it moving on a road near her apartment.

The muscles in his body eased with relief. She was on her way.

Wait.

His brows furrowed and he shook his head.

Why is she driving north on Roosevelt?

“Must be important.” James’s tone took on an odd note. “You know, Jack said the weirdest thing at the wedding the other day.”

Eric barely registered his friend’s words.

The restaurant was south of her apartment.

“What?” Eric muttered, half to himself to make sense of her location and half to James’s statement.

“He said he saw you kissing Hannah.”
