Please ...

“No,” he finally says after a moment, turning around and walking back toward the front door. “We didn’t get that far.”

She begins to wring her hands so damn violently that I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up bruising that beautiful, pale skin of hers.

Reaching over, I gently put a hand on her wrist and smile when she looks up at me.

“Trust me; you’re safe here. No one is going to get into this house that we don’t let walk in and... even though it’s only been barely two days, I think you’re doing a great job. So don’t worry about anything, okay?”

Luna looks away for a moment, cranes her neck to look past me down the street, before she finally relents and nods.

“Thanks. I like it here. You’re a nice little family and I want to do a good job since I know what it’s like to have a sick parent too, you know?”

I feel my demeanor soften as she drops her hands to her sides. Something has her worried, and as long as it’s not Mom, myself, or Kalen, then I’m sure whatever it is will work itself out soon enough.

“Let’s go back inside,” I suggest, nodding toward the open door. “You didn’t get a chance to tell me about what you and Mom talked about, and now that Kalen is back, maybe he’ll want to hear it too.”

Luna lights up instantly, the stress dropping from every inch of her body as she nods, loops an arm through mine, and we walk back toward the house.
