“How was Biology? Did you ace your homework?” I ask him, desperate to change the subject.

Kalen shrugs. “I think so.” He pauses to wipe some crumbs from his lips, then reaches for his Snapple and takes a healthy swig. “I wasn’t really paying attention if I’m being honest.”

I grin at him.

He doesn’t have to pay attention because he retains information like I retain how I’ve always felt about Mom.

Deeply, madly hopeful that she’ll see us again one day.

“Hey.”

I shake away the cobwebs and look at Kalen who’s watching me carefully, cookie hovering just below his mouth.

I watch as his lips curve up into a small smile as he shakes his head. “Don’t give yourself a stroke thinking about her. She’ll be okay. She has been so far.”
