Azura looked around at the expectant guests. Gratitude welled inside her, and she had to take another deep breath.
I can’t believe this is happening.
Then, a movement on the driveway caught her attention. She looked out over the grounds in surprise.
A police car!
Her head swiveled around as she searched for Martin in the crowd. Briefly, their eyes met. He was at the very back of the gardens, trying to sneak away. Azura fought to remain calm.
“So, to each and every one of you, I express my heartfelt gratitude. I won’t keep you from the celebration! Please enjoy.”
She hurried off the gazebo, motioning to the waiters to start bringing out more food and drink. The crowd was distracted for now as they all clapped and gushed to each other about what a wonderful party it was.
Azura cut through them all and headed for the driveway where the cops were slowly getting out of their car. Azura’s heart fell, an agonizing feeling after being so excited such a short time before.
As she approached the police, she glanced behind her to see Gerri hurrying after her. Azura felt some relief to see she wouldn’t be facing this alone. She couldn't imagine a better companion if she was about to walk into hell.
