She is not bound to us for physical favors. She’s tied to us for pure pleasure. And this, what we are experiencing tonight, is so far removed from pleasure.

She basically flipped the bird with both hands and went puff. She put us in our place, resetting everything. Stating it loud and clear.

She’s ready to walk at any given moment.

We go first. And then the money. Not even the money can keep her tethered to us. But we’ll always be on the chopping block.

Good move. Smart. Cruel. Painful. Unpredictable.

“He’s probably looking for her…”

Francisco’s voice pulls me out of my head.

“Yeah… He probably does. But she needs to come back on her own. That’s what she wants. She won’t like it if we drag her back. And we need to play by her rules…”

I smile.

“At least, this time…” I add, glancing at him.

I tip my chin in his direction, pointing mainly to his pocket.

“Any news regarding that incident in New York?”

He scoops out his phone and checks his messages.

“Nah… The building is secure. They say.”

He sounds disappointed.

“They always say that,” I comment.

“Of course they do, but they couldn’t find the man. I’m sure he’s gone. They just couldn’t locate him.”

His phone lands on the table next to his empty glass.

“Just another reason to put the apartment on the market.”

“Selling already?”

“Yeah. Why the hell not?”

“Alejandro’s buying, and you’re selling?”

“He’s buying investments. Do you see him living in New York full time?”

“I don’t know… Things might be different now.”

“Because of her?” he asks, incredulous.

“Uh-huh…”

A grin stretches across his lips.

“Are you fucking testing me now?”

A smile tugs at my lips.

“No. It’s a possibility.”
