I pulled Maverick between my legs again.
I needed him to make me forget that I just admitted I missed him when he wasn’t around.
Maverick foundhis shirt on the floor near the kitchen and put it back on.
I wore panties and an oversized hoodie, nothing else.
I curled my hands around the large sleeves and studied the muscle again on Maverick.
“Next time you’ll listen to me,” I said to him.
He smiled. “That was punishment?”
“Yeah.”
“That’s not much of a lesson you gave me,” he said. “Not after what we did.”
“I had you between my legs…”
“I wanted to be between your legs,” he said.
“I commanded you there.”
“If you say so, sweetie,” he said.
“So, what happened at practice?” I asked.
“Oh, right,” he said. “Big news. In a way. You can’t tell anyone though.”
“What’s going on?” I asked.
My heart jumped into my throat.
One of my fears right now was something happening to Maverick. That he’d call off our arrangement. Or he was going to end up being traded.
Yeah, I know, the idea of him not being around… I was going too far…
“Coach’s wife has cancer,” Maverick said with a frown.
“What did you say?” I asked.
“Yeah, I know. She has breast cancer.”
“What?”
“Coach was a mess. Trashing his office. We heard him and stopped him. Finally got him to open up to us a little. It’s devastating. He’s crushed. They’ve got two kids. A boy and a girl. Coach is lost over it too because Carrie wants to talk about it. She wants to bring it to the public eye. He’s not so sure about that.”
“Cancer,” I whispered.
My heart sank. And kept sinking.
“I know,” Maverick said. “But we told him we’ve got his back, you know? She’s going to fight it, get the treatments and she’s going to be okay.”
“You said that to him? How can you say that, Mav? You don’t know that’s true.”
“It’s called supporting him, sweetie.”
“Supporting him? With lies?”
