Chapter Thirty-Nine
MADISON
“She’s a rock star up there,” Eva yelled into my right ear.
I jumped.
Even in a club full of people and noise, Eva’s voice managed to scare the hell out of me.
That wasn’t her fault though.
It was mine.
I told myself going out tonight was probably a crappy idea.
But I did it anyway.
For two reasons.
One – I wanted to support Zoe.
She was up on stage, singing her heart out, and she had captured most of the people there. Not that I ever doubted Zoe’s talent for a second. She deserved a bigger stage and a chance to become really famous. In her eyes, she would decide that when the time felt right.
The second reason I came out?
Across the bar.
A guy with a clean-cut jaw and shady smile had been looking at me for a while now.
Not even playing the casual glancing game at me either.
He was full on staring.
His eyes telling me more than I ever really needed to know.
“Isn’t she great?” Eva yelled at me.
“She’s the best,” I said. “I’m so happy for her.”
“That’s a bullshit tone,” Eva said. “What’s up with you? Is it really that bad?”
“Let’s get another drink,” I said. “No. Wait. I’m going to get another drink. For free.”
“You’re not going to flash the bartender, are you?” Eva asked. “Sasha is cool and all, but she doesn’t go that way. Then again, she might like women’s bodies. I’m not sure. Go ahead and try it…”
“Eva, no,” I said. “I have a plan.”
I pushed away from the bar and saw the concern in Eva’s eyes right away.
I pointed at her, then I put my fingers to my lips.
Leave me alone. Don’t get involved. You wouldn’t understand.
Would my best friends understand?
They definitely would.
I just didn’t want to talk about it.
