“But seriously, this one was my fault,” I said. “It could have been a lot worse. So, I’ll just be more careful. If he leaves his lucky shirt here again, then he can come get. It won’t be my issue. Right?”
“Just think about why you did what you did,” Zoe said. “You saw his shirt and freaked out.”
“I got caught up in it,” I said.
“Or was it something else?” Eva asked.
“Like what?” I asked.
“You were…” Zoe laughed.
“What?” I asked.
“We’ve never seen you act like that before. Over a guy. Over a shirt. Over something to do with a guy. That was intense. You like him. You care about him.”
“We have a connection. We have a good time together.”
“Okay,” Zoe said.
“It’s not okay,” I said. “You two are being unfair. I saw the shirt and thought about everything he told me. I just got… I don’t know. I opened up to him about my mother, okay? He opened up to me about his lucky shirt. We’re having so much fun and it’s just… you know, I love him. Okay?”
Both Zoe and Eva stepped back and covered their mouths.
“Oh…” I whispered.
So that’s what it all came down to.
The truth.
I was in love with Maverick.
