Maverick took Mike Jr. down to the net and I could no longer hear their conversation.
But I could see the look on Mike Jr.’s face.
Maverick pointed and told Mike Jr. where to stand.
Maverick gave Mike Jr. his stick and his mask.
The mask was gigantic on the kid’s head.
I started to take pictures.
Maverick then whistled for Abel.
Abel skated down and I just kept taking pictures.
Next thing I knew, Maverick took Abel’s stick and a puck.
He then took careful shots at the net, giving Mike Jr. a chance to make the saves.
Which Mike Jr. did.
My heart…
I looked for Coach and spotted him standing at center ice.
Holding a hockey stick.
The man beamed and his eyes glistened.
I took a few pictures of Coach until he looked at me.
He pointed at me and I shrugged my shoulders.
Coach then gave me a thumbs up.
I looked down at the net again.
This time Mike Jr. was crouched down, hitting the stick off the ice.
Maverick backed up a little more and began to skate toward the net.
He took another soft shot and Mike Jr. slapped it out of the way.
Mike Jr. then lifted the mask off his head and dropped the goalie stick.
He pointed to Maverick.
Maverick dropped to his knees and threw his stick out of the way.
“Get him, Mike Jr.!” Abel yelled.
Mike Jr. skated forward and pretended to punch Maverick in the face.
Maverick fell to the ice, pretending to be knocked out.
“Sign this kid right now!” Abel yelled. “Where’s Alonso? We need a contract!”
Mike Jr. laughed.
