Sully sighed. “I’m not going to shortchange you, Bait. Get inside the house and see if Liam is all right. I’ll make some calls and get this mess cleaned up. Then we need to talk about your upcoming assignment.”

The tow truck finally drove off the property. I ducked back from the window as Sully made his way toward the front door. Liam, who looked much better, sat on the sofa, a silver laptop on his lap. Whatever he was doing seemed important. He’d barely looked up at me when I’d apologized for making him sick. He’d just waved a hand and said, “Water under the bridge.” I didn’t think we’d be driving on that bridge together again anytime soon, though.

The front door opened, and I flung myself onto the couch next to Liam. He peeled his attention from the laptop. “What?”

“Nothing.”

“He’s going to act mad, probably read you the riot act, but just sit there and look cute. And pout. Definitely pout. Your lips…”

“But Sully’s straight. That won’t work on him.”

“Hmm, I’ve seen you get away with more than others have when it comes to Sully.” He shrugged. “Can’t hurt to try.”

Sully entered the room, glancing from Liam to me as if we were conspiring against him. He had his resting bitch face on, so I couldn’t even tell if he was angry; he looked that way ninety percent of the time.

“Did everything go okay?” I asked.

“You should have waited for him to bring it up,” Liam said from the corner of his mouth.

Too late.

“I’m not upset,” Sully said. “I should have been the one to teach him to drive.”

“Are you somehow implying this is my fault?” Liam growled.

“It’s really not,” I said. “I’m just a terrible driver. It’s why I never bothered to learn. The other two times I ever tried went even worse than today. I couldn’t get the driving instructor to take me back on the road.”

“You need a little more practice, is all.”

I needed a lot more than a little practice, but for some reason, he hadn’t demanded my head for payment to the havoc I’d reaped on his property, so I wasn’t inclined to disagree with him.

“Umm, okay.”

“For now, either Liam or I will take you out whenever it’s needed for a job.” He clapped his hands as if that had been settled and chose the armchair across from us. “Let’s talk about tonight’s mission and what’s expected of you. Then Liam will take you shopping.”

Liam shook his head. “Nope, too soon. I need a grace period from that disaster, my friend. You’re up for shopping duty.”

“May I remind you I’m the one who does the field jobs?”

“And your point is?”

Sully swore under his breath.

“How long have you two worked together?” They had a sullen type of relationship with affectionate insults that suggested years of familiarity with each other.

“Too long,” Sully said. “I want to talk about tonight and what’s expected of you, Bait.”

“Tonight?” My stomach flipped. “Isn’t that too soon? I’m still learning the basics.” He’d mentioned an upcoming job yesterday, but I hadn’t imagined it would be this soon.

“This part should come naturally to you. Consider it a test run if you will.”

“You want me to sleep with someone?” Wasn’t that what he meant by something that came naturally to me?

“No, nothing so drastic. Like I explained before, we’ll have to attend a semi-formal function. Some important people from the city will be in attendance. There’s someone I need to get close to, and I have confirmation he’ll be there.”

“What do you want to speak to him about?”

“Confidential information.”
