No sooner had the words left his mouth than gunshots peppered the air.
Liam threw the cab door open. “Get down! On the ground.”
I dropped to the ground, my hands over my ears. Where the fuck was Sully? Was he hit? Bullets kicked up gravel next to me. Then everything turned silent.
“Kit, you okay?” Sully called.
Oh, thank god.
“Y-yes.”
“I have you covered. Get in the car. Liam, take him.”
“I’m not leaving you,” I yelled. “We’re in this together.”
“Get in the fucking car, Kit. Now!”
I climbed to my feet but stayed low as I dashed to the car and dove into the back seat, my heart pounding in my chest. Liam revved the engine.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” I shouted.
“You heard him. He wants me to get you out of here.”
“We’re not leaving him.”
“Sorry, Kit, but I fear Sullivan more than I do you.”
“Please don’t leave him! Please, Liam. Ivan called for backup. We can’t just leave him.”
Liam swore under his breath but didn’t drive away. He took a gun out of the glove compartment and unbuckled his seat belt. “Stay here.”
“No, I should be the one to go.”
“If something happens to you, Sullivan will kill me.”
“This is not the emergency plan,” I reminded him. “You can’t put me in charge of driving the car. You need to stay here so we can get away. Now give me the gun.”
Another gunshot exploded in the night. Liam thrust the gun in my hand. “For god’s sake, Kit, be safe. If you end up dead because I disobeyed Sullivan, he’ll dig me a spot right next to you.”
