“Maybe at first, but I don’t want to fight with you anymore, Sully.”

“Which means?”

I threw my hands up. “You win. I won’t bother you about letting me work for you again. I’ll just find another job somewhere else.”

“Why is it so important to you to continue working for me, even knowing what we do?” He lowered his voice.

“You don’t understand.”

“Make me. I’m listening this time, Kit.”

I searched his face. Yes, he was genuinely interested. Before, when I tried to talk to him about this, he would get upset and cut me off. No wonder I’d spent ten grand of his money.Yup, a very solid excuse to remember when he brought that up.

“I worked for Nolan for six months,” I said. “And every penny I made I had to hand over to him. He took away my earnings. It might be different, but you’re doing the same thing. At least that’s what it feels like. Like you’ve taken away what I was earning. After handing over whatever money I made for so long, I was happy to finally hang on to something that was all mine. That I could spend it any way I want, if even to send it to friends.”

Sully placed a hand on my biceps, caressing my skin. “I’m sorry I didn’t listen before. I understand better now, and you can come work for me again. We’ll need to revise the rules a bit—”

“Are you serious?”

“I am.”

With a cry, I threw myself at Sully. He caught me and held me tight against him. I wrapped my legs around his waist and buried my face in his neck. I clamped my eyes shut tight against the tears that prickled there.

“This doesn’t mean I won’t still worry about you, you know,” he said into my ear. “I’m going to need you to be as careful as possible. You’re too important to lose.”

I tilted my head back and gazed at him. “You think I don’t feel the same about you?” I took his face into my hands and slanted my lips over his. Sully kissed me back, slipping his hands under my ass and holding me steady in his arms. He thrust his tongue into my mouth and moaned.

“Three fucking days.” He kissed my forehead. “Let’s go home. Cinnamon will be glad to know we’ve stopped fighting.”

I groaned. “The poor girl had to listen to us bicker.”

“Now she’ll hear us making up.” He lowered me to the floor. “Say good-bye to your annoying friend.”

“He’s not annoying. He’s loyal.”

I hurried to the kitchen, where Tack sat polishing off his pizza as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

“You two kissed and made up?”

“Yeah, and he’s going to let me continue working for him.”

“Way to go.” He held his hand up, and I high-fived him. “You make him work for it, sweetie.”

“Thanks for letting me hang out here. We’re heading home now.”

“No problem. Anytime you need a place to hide and cry, you can come here.”

“Over my dead body,” Sully growled from the hall.
