“Right, like you never did it?”

“Unless you count gym, which everyone had to take, the easiest class I had in high school was oral communications.” She dropped the peeled potato in a pot of water and started on another.

“I took an oral communications class senior year with the teacher from hell. Everyone hated Mrs. Bell.”

“I had one of those for Algebra. No one wanted to see Mr. Steward’s name on their class schedule.” Regardless of geographic location or size, every high school had at least one teacher everyone disliked. “When it was on, I never watchedPrecinct 3, but Lisa’s a talented actress.”

“Yeah, she played the role of normal well.” Keith drank the last mouthful in his glass and reached for the wine bottle.

“You’re not wrong there, but I was thinking about how I believed we were friends. Not once did I suspect anything. Even when she conveniently got those pictures of you, I didn’t think she had an ulterior motive.”

“Coleman’s got contacts everywhere. I’m sure he could arrange to get her nominated for an Oscar.”

“If anyone could make that happen, it’d be Coleman.” The director was on a first-name basis with everyone from heads of state and CEOs to movie directors. “This will sound nuts, but I feel sorry for her.”

“She tried to shoot you in your own damn kitchen.” Setting down his glass, Keith pressed his palm against her forehead. “You don’t feel hot. Did you bang your head trying to get the gun away from Lisa?”

Next time she’d know to keep her big mouth shut. “Really? I forgot she pointed a gun at me. What would I do without you here to remind me?”Maybe Lisa didn’t deserve any sympathy, but that didn’t change how Maddie felt. “She believed you loved her and couldn’t accept that you’d moved on. Can you imagine being so jealous of anyone that you’d try to kill them? A person willing to go that far has mental health issues.”

“No one would disagree that Lisa’s got issues. Whatever attorney represents her will use an insanity defense in court.”

Lisa faced a list of various charges, including attempted murder and stalking. When her day came in court, Maddie would have to see her again, but until then, she didn’t want to think about her. “She’s not our problem, and I don’t want to waste any more time talking about Lisa tonight.”

“You won’t get an argument from me.”
