“You sound strained. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” I cleared my throat.
“Are you with your childhood sweetheart? Have you confessed your love yet?”
“Chase,” I growled.
“Fine, fine. I found the old boyfriend. He has an apartment on Main Street. I’ll text you the address.”
“Thanks. Emily and I will go check it out.”
“You should bring her around to the Celtic Knot when this is over,” he said. “Everyone would love to meet her.”
I knew that to be true but it didn't matter. It didn’t matter that I was in love with Emily and most likely always would be. She had successfully gotten out of Newbury and started life somewhere else. Somewhere she was happy. I wasn’t about to trap her in this cesspool.
After hanging up, I turned back to Emily. She was looking at me with a flushed face and bright eyes. I wished I knew what she was thinking about. Was she regretting almost letting me kiss her? Was she worried I would do it again? Don’t trap her here. She deserves better than Newbury. She deserves better than you.
I cleared my throat. “Chase found Evan,” I said. “Let’s go talk to him.”
