And worse, she felt guilty.
Because Gunnar was angry, and that she had expected. But there was a sense she’d...disappointed him.
And she hated it.
But she couldn’t do anything but brazen it out now. Her dad hadn’t taught her how to back down. He’d only taught her to dig in.
And right now, defending herself had never been more important.
Because it was quite possible she contained a life.
“I know that at least at one point you were somewhere where it was illegal. As it was Jason committing the espionage, and he is my assistant.”
“That little weasel. He ratted me out didn’t he?”
“Can a weasel rat something? Or is it... A weaseling?”
“I don’t know, and I don’t care,” she returned, ferociously. She leaned forward and snatched her crackers out of his hand, and stood up. But all at once, the blood left her head, and she felt woozy.
“Gunnar?” It was the last thing she said, and his face was the last thing she saw, before she collapsed into his arms.
