“Miss Catrin?”

I jump. Lambert stands across from me, where Oudin was a few minutes ago. In one hand he holds a hammer and his other props a polished piece of wood against the floor “Are you well?” he asks.

“Yes, thank you,” I manage to say. “The blessing is finished. Do you want help?”

Lambert shakes his head. “No, thank you. I know you’ll understand when I say I’d rather do this alone.”

“I do.” His father isn’t visible anymore, but I’m sure he’s waiting just outside. “Is there a back door? I’d rather avoid your brother if I can.”

“Of course.” Lambert nods to the kitchen as he puts the hammer down to set the lid on Juliane’s casket. “Good night, Catrin.”

“Good night… Lambert.” I walk to the kitchen, pausing at the door to switch my cloak around to the moonweave side. Before letting myself out, I catch a glimpse of Lambert gazing at his sister’s face for the last time.
