They all gasped.

“He’s gone,” Lee cried.

“What happened?” Daisy asked as they all peered into the pond.

The water was still.

“I think when she held out her hand, that was his signal it was time to go home to her,” Ellis said, staring into the water.

Daisy walked over to Ellis and pulled him into her arms. “You, my husband, are an excellent man. I think you just helped your enemy. Arianna must have been a wonderful woman. Do you have any other secrets?”

“She was a wonderful woman,” he said, thinking he was holding someone who he loved even more. “My only secret is that you’re my love. My wife, my woman. She was the past and you are my future. And even that is a secret no more.”

Daisy leaned back, her lips covering his. “Take me home, husband. I need both of my men.”

Ellis took her hand and they walked to the wagon. He needed her as well. Tonight they would both claim their wife.
