It was true. The woman was not stupid. In fact, she was damn smart.
“I know, but drunks don’t often think logically.”
Lee had to turn his head. Why didn’t he just tell her the truth? Sooner or later, she was going to learn the truth and then she’d be furious at Ellis for not being honest.
With a sigh, Lee stood and stretched. “What if we all go to Helena? Daisy has never been, and this way, we could keep an eye on her and you’ll be with me when I confront this man about my sister.”
Daisy stopped and gazed at the two men. He could see she was interested in going. He could see the excitement growing in her eyes.
“If I get pregnant, I might not get another chance anytime soon. This would be a good time for the three of us to go together.”
Ellis smiled and nodded. Lee knew he was just glad they were off the subject of Henry Cox. But this would not be the end of it, and when Daisy learned the truth, she was going to be furious at him.
“How far away is it?” she asked.
“Five hours by wagon, and we will go by wagon, so that hopefully, my sister will return with us,” Lee said.
“Yes, let’s take the wagon, so we can pick up some extra supplies.”
A smile spread across Daisy’s face. “So we’re all going tomorrow?”
“We’re all going,” Ellis said.
Her eyes all but danced as she flounced toward the kitchen, then glanced back at them. A frown appeared between her brows. “Now, I don’t have to be angry at you any longer. But there had better be no more secrets.”
After she walked into the kitchen, Lee turned to Ellis. “Why didn’t you tell her about Henry and Arianna?”
He sighed. “It’s hard to talk about. No matter what, I’ll always love Arianna and the child she carried. It’s just Henry I can’t stand. The man brought all of this heartache on all of us. He was the one who stood in the way of us marrying.”
“Don’t let him ruin what you have with Daisy. If she finds out from someone other than you, she’ll be angry.”
“I know, but I just haven’t wanted to talk about it. Someday soon, I’ll tell her.”
“You better and I wouldn’t wait too long.”
