“I’d better go and check on Annabella and see if she needs my help.” I left Jack in the living room and went to the kitchen. She was standing there wearing my mom’s apron and washing dishes. If that was not shocking enough, my dad was standing beside her drying them.

It was both a beautiful and painful moment.

“I really can’t impose on you, Mr. Marzoni,” she said.

“It’s no imposition at all. We have a guest room. And besides, Lilly would never forgive me if I let you go to a hotel.”

Did I hear him correctly? Was he asking her to stay here?

“Are you sure?” she asked.

“I’m positive. And after all you have done for us today, it’s the least we can do for you. Besides, it will give you and Colton some time together instead of running back and forth to town,” he said.

“I…should really speak to Colton first,” she said.

I cleared my throat and said, “About what?”

She turned around and smiled. “Your dad just offered me the spare room while I’m here. Is that okay with you?”

Even if I wanted to, I couldn’t say no. Dad would have my hide. It was the gentlemanly thing to do, so I nodded. So much for us getting to know each other. We aren't getting any time alone in this house.

I couldn’t help but wonder when my dad’s plan had changed. Then I looked into her beautiful blue eyes and I had my answer. She was sweet and loving and filled with warmth. This had nothing to do with me, or even Annabella. It was about my dad. Her presence was exactly what he needed in this house right now.Someone who could make you forget how much pain you’re in.
