I don’t know what to say. He’s not breaking the contract, but why show me his humble abode and make me live here with him? He still hasn’t answered me about Luka Caruso. He promised to take care of it.

“Why are we moving here, now?” I ask. “Did Luka Caruso threaten you too?” It’s the only logical explanation that I can make sense of. Why else would he worry about those men at the store tonight?

They were following us. Jace had seen it. He probably has been trained to take notice of suspicious people and situations. Being a billionaire must come with a lot of threats. I can only surmise that Luka is after his fortune.

But Jace is an honest man, making an honest living.

“He’s always a threat.”

My gaze tightens as I turn with my back to the window and fold my arms across my chest. “There’s something you’re not telling me.” I can feel it, the heaviness and uncertainty looming over me. Whether it’s intuition or just plain common sense, he’s hiding something from me.

“You’re right, but it’s for your safety,” Jace says. “I can’t protect you all the time. This way, you and my child are always safe.”

My mouth is dry, parched. “And that kiss earlier. What was that?” I ask.

I need the truth.

Was it all an act?

Am I a fool for believing he feels something for me?
