“You will if you want to keep your little lover boy safe.”
So, they don’t know about the surrogacy arrangement. I almost breathe a sigh of relief. I’m not out of the woods yet. These men are dangerous, and Jace has no idea what he’s up against or what I’ve done, the damage that I could unintentionally inflict.
I refrain from telling Luka that Jace isn’t my lover boy. That we’re just colleagues. He’ll never buy it, and maybe it’s better if he thinks we’re more than we are. But I’m not sure how it’s better, how I could use that as leverage?
“Why Jace?” I ask. Why did they want me to gain employment with Jace Barone? They couldn’t have known that I’d have access to his home and his personal computer.
“That’s none of your concern,” Luka says with disgust. “Answer your messages.” He turns and walks away into the crowd of pedestrians, disappearing in front of me.
Do I tell Jace about Luka? What would I say? Would he even believe me that it isn’t my fault?
I hurry inside the restaurant and order a sandwich to go. I grab a bag of potato chips and take the items back with me to the office. After running into Luka, all I want to do is return to my desk, where it’s safe. At least I think it’s safe.
There are guards inside the building. It’s why he didn’t show his face to me at work. But how did he get the package delivered? Who at the company is working for the Caruso family? It has to be an inside job.
