“Nice of you to join us,” Vance says.

The door slams shut behind me. I try the handle, but it’s child-safety locked.

Why would I expect anything less from men like Vance?

“Like I had a choice in the matter.” His goons pulled me off the street at gunpoint and thrust me into the back of the SUV.

The driver jets off, away from the small downtown area of Breckenridge.

Vance snatches my purse, rolls down the window, and tosses it out the window.

“Hey!” I squeal.

“Your phone can be tracked,” Vance says.

He could have just pulled out my phone, but he chose to dump my entire purse, wallet, and inside contents on the street to get run over by the next passing vehicle.

Jerk.

“What do you want with me?” I ask. If he plans on killing me, would he have even bothered to nab me off the street first?

I still don’t know what happened to Serene or Laura. Were they tortured before they died?

A shiver runs through my body.

Did he murder them or have his goons do it? Could Moreno be mistaken?

Vance reaches his hand out to stroke my cheek. “I just want to have a little fun. Don’t worry, Princess.”

I pull back. There’s nowhere for me to go.

“I’m not your princess.” I snarl at him. He better keep his grubby paws off me.

My back is against the window of the SUV. The door handle doesn’t open. I could try rolling down the window and throwing myself through the open pane, but the driver picked up speed, and I doubt I’d get more than halfway out before Vance grabs me and drags me back inside.

And that assumes that I can open the window.

As we travel farther from Breckenridge, there are fewer vehicles on the road.

I should have heeded Moreno’s warning and taken Sawyer with me. At least then, I’d have had a fighting chance.

But what if Vance would have gone after Moreno and Nova if Sawyer had been protecting me?

Vance leans in and every hair on my body stands on end.

A warning that my life is in danger.

No kidding.

My heart is pounding against my ribcage, reminding me that I’m trapped, but eventually, the vehicle will have to come to a stop, and when someone opens the back door, I’ll run.

“I like a little bite in a girl,” Vance says. He doesn’t smile. I doubt he’s ever grinned in his life.

He grabs a fistful of my hair and brings my face closer.
