Dante is quiet for the briefest of seconds. “You’re carrying my child. Do you really think I’m going to let you go on a date with that loser?”

“How did you know?” I pull him with me out of sight in case any of the guard’s approach. “We have to get you out of here.”

He laughs under his breath. “Only if you’re coming with me.”

I should be angry. Push him away. Tell him to leave. He invaded my house.

Except this isn’t my house. At least not anymore.

I have no reason to believe that Romano lied to me, which means the monster I’ve been living with isn’t Dante but my Papa.

But I need to hear it from Dante. “Is it true?” I ask, staring up at him.

He shakes his head. He has no idea what I just uncovered.

“You told me Papa poisoned me. Did he also have me abducted? Is he the one trafficking women, girls, children?” My heart might burst out of my chest.

I thought Dante was the monster and maybe he is, but he’s never been that way toward me.

I’m queasy, and Dante scoops me up into his arms before I can collapse. It’s too much to bear.

“I’m taking you home with me.”

He’s not asking for my permission. There are gunshots inside and out. Is it safe to leave? Probably not, but his men are the invaders, and I am willing to go with him. Even held captive by Dante, he’s more humane than my old man.

“Did you kill my papa?” I must know the truth.

“I gave the final order, but it wasn’t my bullet.”
