Chapter Nine

Skylar

I was desperate to escape.

My stupid heels weren’t helping me through the grass. I refused to glance behind me, worried that it might slow me down.

Bang!

A shot rang out and whizzed by my head.

“That was a warning shot,” Angelo bellowed. “I don’t ever miss.”

Was he bluffing? He’d been close as hell to hitting me.

I had momentarily slowed down, tripping over my stupid heels.

That was all it took for his men to force me to the ground and frisk me.

Their hands wandered a little too long and close against my skin, under my skirt.

“Get off me!”

It took two guards, one at each side, to drag me to the black SUV.

“No!” I shouted and thrashed about, trying to break free.

“Do you want me to shoot you?” Angelo asked as he stood beside the car. Just moments ago, he’d been seated inside the front passenger seat.

Had he gotten out to shoot me? Was he a better shot than his men, or did he not trust them to do the job?

I slunk into the backseat.

Angelo held the door open for me. There wasn’t much choice in the matter.

The two security goons refused to loosen their grip on me until I was in the vehicle.

Angelo slammed the door shut behind me. He climbed into the front seat and glanced back at me. “Don’t try anything stupid.”

He flashed his gun in my direction, his hand on the trigger.

“I’m just itching to pull it again.”

My mouth felt dry. I pursed my lips but didn’t say anything.

What could I say that would make him leave me the hell alone?
