Angelo led me toward his black SUV, waiting out front by the entrance of Enzo’s mansion.

“Get off me!” I thrust myself away from him, kicking and clawing at him with my fingernails—anything to aid in my escape.

“Enough!” Angelo’s voice bellowed as he backhanded me across the face, and his finger caught on my chain. He yanked the necklace off, letting it fall to the ground.

My cheek stung, and I tasted the metallic zing of blood on my lips.

“Get in!” Angelo ordered.

One of the guards who had escorted us outside opened the back door of the SUV.

I didn’t budge. I wasn’t willfully going to further endanger myself. “No,” I said.

I wasn’t going to bow down to anyone, mafia boss or otherwise.

This was my chance: my one and possibly the only opportunity to escape.

Angelo had climbed into the front seat of the vehicle and blatantly thought I would follow his orders.

I wasn’t like those other girls.

Was I afraid?

Yes, but I would fight before I gave in to his demands.

I slipped past the guard who was a solid six-foot-two and hurried as fast as my feet would take me. I sprinted across the driveway and through the grass in stilettos—no easy task.

I headed for the tree line that led to the forest.

How far would I get before they’d catch me?

Would they stop if I made it home, or would they continue to hunt me down?

Bang!
