“Chamomile?” That was my favorite, especially when my nerves were shot. I approached the desk, the thick wood keeping a distance between us, which made me feel safe.

I lifted the delicate material to my lips, having a sip.

“Yes, it’s my favorite. I don’t drink tea that often, but when I do, I always prefer a cup of chamomile,” he said.

Maybe he wasn’t all bad? I smiled wistfully into the cup and took another sip. “Yes, mine too.”

“I am sorry, Harper,” Enzo said, calling me by name. Had he mistaken my name forTesero,or had he bequeathed a pet name on me?

Sighing, I sipped the tea, the liquid hot but not burning my mouth. I swallowed the dark liquid, my body beginning to relax. Already I felt better, calmer.

The china slipped out of my hands and crashed onto the floor at my feet. I opened my mouth to apologize, but no sound came out. My legs grew weak, my arms didn’t cooperate, and as my body began to collapse to the ground, Enzo caught me before I hit the floor.

“Sleep now,Tesero.” He kissed my forehead.

Inside, I screamed. I shouted. I begged for him to let me go.

I was paralyzed, and he held me in his arms, before my vision went dark.
