That sounded amazing. “Just the girls?” I’d miss spending the evening with Lincoln, but he was just a fling.

Wasn’t he?

Besides, he had lied about working security on set. Some time apart wasn’t a bad idea.

In a few short days, I’d be finished filming and back in Los Angeles.

“Yes,” Ariella said. “I’ll text you the information if you don’t mind giving me your phone number.”

I didn’t want to admit the jealousy seeped through my veins as Mason dropped me off at the set.

The director didn’t look thrilled that I was late, again. He stormed toward me, and before he could blast me with being irresponsible or not caring about the role, I offered up an apology.

“I’m sorry,” I said, quick to apologize on my way to makeup.

I didn’t stop to make small talk or even offer up an excuse.

“Where the hell is your bodyguard?” the director fumed, stomping behind me.

I swallowed the lump buried in my throat. “Bodyguard?” I repeated.

My voice was hoarse. He’d caught me off-guard.

“I have a bodyguard?”

Is that why Lincoln had insisted on jumping into the damned river to go rafting with me? Even after I’d left him at the dock, he’d rented a raft and caught up with me.

I’d been fooled into thinking that he’d wanted to spend time with me.

That I’d meant something to him!

Tears threatened my vision.

The director scoffed under his breath. “Of course, you have someone watching your every move. Do you honestly believe the studio trusted you after the last incident when you worked for me?”

The sun beat down, and the air felt hot, suffocating.

“You don’t know anything about me.” I hurried into the makeup trailer and slammed the door shut behind me, locking it.

The young woman, Melissa, sat on the bed. Her attention had been on her phone when I burst through the door. “Sorry I’m late. I rear-ended a car on my way in this morning.”

Her eyes widened, and she stood. “Are you okay?” Her eyes raked over me.

Did I not look okay? “Fine, just a little off today.”

It was hard not to be flustered from it, along with the argument from the director which didn’t even take into account what I’d heard about Lincoln.

He was my bodyguard, wasn’t he?

I’d seen him on set and off. Almost every night, he’d been with me since the moment that I had arrived in town.

Had that been planned?

My instincts told me to run, but without a car, I had no way of leaving. I slumped into the chair in front of the mirror. A scowl etched to my face as Melissa towered from above.

“Any chance I can borrow your car?”
