The seatbelt locked in place from the abrupt stop.

Seconds later, we were thrown forward, metal ground together, as someone ran into us.

My heart hammered in my chest. “Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

I glanced in the rearview mirror. “Harper?” I whispered, unlocking the door.

I unbuckled my seatbelt and stepped out, surprised to see that she’d been the one that rammed into my car.

Hazel stepped out of the passenger side too. “Are you okay?” Hazel asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” Just a bit shook up, but relieved it was only Harper.

My first fear had been that Ben had found me.

Was that irrational? He was out there, somewhere.

Would I always be looking over my shoulder?

There was no recent hotel or other credit card receipts to determine where he’d gone, no cell phone that we’d found and been able to track.

“I’m so sorry,” Harper apologized. “I didn’t see your car stopped around the bend.”

A pickup truck slowed on its approach.

“Seriously?” Hazel muttered under her breath.

Was she grumbling about Harper hitting us or the approaching driver?
