My foot tapped against the floorboards, restless.

“We’ll be there soon,” he said. He flipped his lights on to hurry through traffic but left the siren off.

As we approached the last half mile, he turned off the lights and pulled into the parking lot with a half dozen other squad cars behind us.

We had to be careful.

The last time we all were here, there’d been a hostage situation, and while it had been different, I didn’t want Ariella’s life in jeopardy again.

“I should make you wait in the car,” Sheriff Nelson said. He stepped outside, and I followed.

I had pissed him off the last time, storming in and saving Ariella and Hazel without thinking.

I’d been reckless, but I’d done what I had to do, and I held no regrets.

“Don’t make me regret inviting you along.”
