"We should get back out to the car. I left Izzie in there, and it's been long enough," Jaxson said and hurried down the hall like a hurricane, leaving me standing there with Mason.
Was he trying to get away from me or avoid answering the question? Perhaps he was inclined to do both. I groaned and heard Mason chuckling behind me. "You better go catch him before he leaves you in the cold and dust. I know I would."
"God, you're an ass," I muttered on my way out of his office and rushed to the car.
Jaxson sat in the truck's cabin waiting for me. I climbed into the passenger side and buckled up. I shot him a look that said, 'fuck you.' I was no longer in the mood to talk. It didn't help that his adorable little girl was seated behind us, singing Disney princess songs.
"You're mad. Let me explain," Jaxson said.
"Can you? Do you mean it wasn't intentional?" I found it difficult to believe that he just forgot to include that little tidbit in the listing. While he seemed like a nice guy, he was a jerk just like Mason.
He answered me calmly as he turned to face me, the truck still in park. "I offered to help Mason list the cabin. That was my mistake, and the few dollars he gave me for helping, I swear it's all yours."
Was he trying to make me feel bad? I was short on cash, like really short where my bank account was drained, and all I had was a couple of one's left in my wallet. I still needed to fix my car and now install electricity into the cabin. That had to cost a fortune! I wasn't rich, and this wasn't my second home.
"I don't want your money." I could use it, but I wasn't about to tell him that minor fact. He had a daughter, and kids were expensive. I would not take his money. That jerk Mason, I would have gladly snatched from his greedy little palms, but that didn't seem a likely scenario.
Jaxson stared at me, his gaze unwavering. "Okay. How about I take you into town and buy you a fridge and generator?"
"Are you serious? I don't need handouts." It was precisely what I needed to survive and live in that rustic cabin, but I didn't want to seem desperate.
