ChapterThirteen

“Chocolate.”

I looked at Dominic, at the new blue eyes he now wore, at those strange lips that had said that word, and my own parted.

“Anything you have with chocolate in it will do,” he told the waiter, who held a small pad in his hand and wrote the order down.

My lips sealed shut and I rearranged the napkin in front of me.

Then, I remembered who I was supposed to be.

“Thank you, baby,” I cooed sweetly, and Dominic stretched his lips into what was probably supposed to be a smile, but really wasn’t.

He made his own order, then stretched his arm to reach for my hand.

“Noah is very touchy,” he informed me, almost under his breath, then proceeded to run his thumb over my knuckles, making my breath hitch for a bit.

I smiled my best smile and batted my lashes at him.

“That’s sweet,” I said, then giggled, which wasn’t a problem at all. It didn’t need to be any different from my own laugh.

“People are going to approach me. People who know Noah,” he continued.

“It’s best if I ignore them,” I said with a nod, still holding that smile. It was getting really hot in here, especially my right hand that was firmly in his, but the chocolate was coming, so I wasn’t complaining yet.

“Yes. These guys are not going to let anyone touch me,” he said, nodding his head to the side, where the bodyguards stood and watched everyone around us with murderous eyes.

The restaurant was large, and it was full of people, and they’d all watched us when we came in. They’d watched me, with my miniskirt and high heels and pink hair. Not that it even mattered, but it kinda felt good. Dominic didn’t think so, judging by the low growls he let out until we sat down, but I liked the attention. A little bit of it wasn’t going to hurt me. I was pretending to be someone else, anyway.

“People are still going to try,” I said, forcing myself to focus on the conversation. “How are you going to know their names?”

“Last night I studied everyone Noah knows who’ll be at the show.”

I raised a brow. “Did you sleep at all?”

“About an hour,” he said. I sighed.

“You should have let me help you.” He hadn’t slept at all! Now I felt guilty.

“You don’t need to know who any of them are,” he said, waving his hand dismissively. “Don’t leave my side, baby. Do you understand me?” He looked into my eyes, and for a moment, I saw his real ones, green with specks of gold, not blue. “I need you close to me every second.”

I blew out a breath and pouted, just for show. His eyes caught on my lip instantly. “I’ll tell you again—I am not helpless, baby. I can hold a gun. I can shoot. I can fight. I’m not big, but I’m fast.”

At that, one corner of his lips turned up. “I know that.”

“Then stop worrying about me. Let’s just focus on the job, can we do that?”

For a moment, he only looked at me, his face expressionless, like he hadn’t figured out what to think yet.

Then, the waiter came and brought our order—chocolate cake, chocolate pudding, and pancakes covered in melted chocolate, too.

If this wasn’t heaven, I don’t know what was. I dove in and ate like a starved woman, until all three plates were empty.

The car show was crowded. And very loud. So many colors—shiny and smooth and mouthwatering. So many cars and so many smells—leather, metal, paint. It was supposed to make me nauseous, especially after all I’d eaten, but it didn’t. My system was using up the chocolate like fuel, like it had never done before. And in return, my mind was sharper, my vision clearer, and I could have sworn my limbs were stronger, too.

My arm was laced to Dominic’s as we walked into the large room, one bodyguard in front, the other in the back.

“What now?” I asked, a bit excited. I wasn’t much of a car fan, but I’d need to take some pictures because my brothers were going to lose their minds when they saw this place.
