CHAPTER18

Gunner gazedup at the goddess before him. Her natural two-toned eyes had gone full white. The magic that shimmered along her skin was no longer fractals, but rather as if it werewithinher. Her pale skin glowed like moonstone, her dark hair rustling in the gentle breeze that surrounded her. She bared her fangs at him, and Gunner thought for sure this was how it all ended.

And if it was the end, it was not a terrible way to go.

Gunner felt trapped beneath the surface of his own body as his wolf separated itself, coming to the surface fully.

Taking over, and for once he was glad to let his wolf drive the car.

Because he was quite certain Cate… no,Hecate...was right.

His mortal body would not be able to handle her.

Because just the sight of her as she rode his dick, taking her own pleasure from him, made him want to explode into a million pieces, nevermind how it felt to be inside her warm, slick walls.

Better than anything I’ve ever felt in my entire damn life.

She let go of his wrists, and he did not waste the chance to touch her, feel her, grab her. He needed every bit of her he could have, and somehow every bit would not be enough.

He’dneverget enough of this woman.

His mate.

Gunner sank his fingernails into the flesh of her juicy ass as he thrust up into her.

It was all quite a maddening blur; rushed hands, and lips on lips, kissing, biting...

Gunner sat up, wrapping his arms around Cate’s body, lips seeking out breasts and nipples, fingers stroking her entrance, her clit, as he filled her. Her fangs bit down on his shoulder as her walls fluttered around his cock, and the sound of her release… He could not hold his own release back at the sound as he emptied himself into her with a final deep thrust, severing all the remaining tethers, like one cuts the string of a balloon.

Everything was somehow sharper, more pronounced, and he could have sworn he heard a sob.

Is she crying?

But before he could soothe his mate, an earthquake rumbled beneath them.

No,insideof him.

Cate dislodged herself from him, and he hated how empty he felt afterward.

That distaste soon gave way to something much more intense.

Pain.

Gunner’s bones snapped and popped, and the feeling was awful.

As if he were dying.

He tried to speak, to say anything, but words would not come out of his mouth, only growls and grunts that sounded more animal than human.

His muscles reformed around the shape of new bones, and his back arched. His spine tingled with a numbing sensation as he doubled over onto the ground, fingers digging into the earth to hold on.

Claws forced their way through the edges of his fingertips, and the world blurred once more. Gunner shut his eyes to keep the dizziness at bay, and when he opened them again, he could not believe what he saw.

Paws.

Large, white paws.

Sounds of the forest were sharp, his eyesight so much clearer than before, and one startling realization took over everything.

I am a wolf.

I have finally shifted.

Instinctually, he knew what to do. He’d been waiting his whole life for this moment.

So Gunner lifted his head to the moon, and he howled.

The echoes of wolves in the distance answered his call, and Gunner felt complete.
