CHAPTER13

The eveningcertainly had not gone as Gunner planned, but in a way it had gone just as Cody wished it would for him.

Go to the speed date thing. Meet a girl. Get laid.

Although the get laid part hadn’t happened, yet…

And it might not if you don’t keep your shit together and quit pissing the woman off.

Gunner felt more than exposed standing in the moonlight, naked and waiting. Even now, he could feel his caged wolf pacing inside of him in a way it never had before. Though Cate didn’t look like a millennia-old deity. In fact, she looked no older than someone in her late twenties. He could not deny the way his wolf responded to her magic, her presence in the moonlight. He’d triedeverythingelse.

Perhaps this is just some twisted joke.

But before he could finish the thought, the sound of the door shutting broke his thoughts.

His throat was suddenly dry as his gaze settled on the five foot, four inch goddess, whose comfortable clothing consisted of nothing more than a black robe so opaque it left little to the imagination. Her long raven hair tumbled over her shoulders, the one stark silver streak standing out against the darkness like a beam of moonlight.

Black and grey gems adorned her neck, falling to her abdomen, drawing attention to her navel. Her dual-toned eyes glowed of their own accord as she took small barefoot steps toward him. The robe looked to be trimmed in a soft black fabric and boasted silver embroidery that sparkled like diamonds in the light.

She looked positivelybreathtaking, and his wolf was more than enticed.

He was salivating, waiting for her.

Her touch, her magic.

To feel her, be inside her.

When she stood in front of him, it took all his concentration to remain controlled. He forced himself to focus on her beautiful eyes, eyes that he felt could see into his very soul.

“You look nice,” he smirked.

Cateblushed.

“It is proper for a ceremony such as this—”

His lips found hers, and he kissed her softly, wistfully, if only for a moment before pulling away.

“You don’t take compliments well, do you?” he whispered to her, stealing a glance at her dual-toned eyes once more. They really were quite stunning.

“I… No. Not anymore.” She set her small hand on his chest, her fingers cautiously tracing lines across his skin, the motion leaving a small barrier between them. Space.

Perhaps she doesn’t want to do this…

Gunner’s wolf panicked.

She doesn’t want us.

We have failed again...for the last time.

“We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to. I mean… I’ll be fine, I—”

Cate leaned into him, closing the distance between them with her lips upon his, the movement startling him.

Her kiss was not polite, either, as she snaked her fingers up his chest, along his neck, into his hair, tugging at his locks. She parted her lips, her tongue sliding into his mouth with invitation. Gunner settled his hands against the soft fabric, rustling it as he tried to find the opening. He needed to feelher, not some costume.

Her skin, her warmth.

“Gods, why am I like this?” she whispered against his lips, her breath heavy. “Why do you make me like this? I—”
