CHAPTER6
The moonlight was bright, shining like a beacon, glaring at Gunner.
I can hear voices, but I only recognize one.
That sharp tone, which carries a hint of annoyance, but also panic.
The girl from the DeLux Cafe.
The one with the glowing eyes…
What the hell?
Gunner could hear the sound of crashing, as if objects were falling all around him, but he felt strangely weighted down, as if a hand pressed on his chest. In his vision, he did not see anything falling, crashing to the ground. He only saw a wolf emerging from the moon, with glowing yellow eyes, teeth poised in a growl that to most would be quite fearsome.
But to Gunner, it only looked… badass. Majestic, even.
Gunner fixated on the wolf as it stalked closer to him. He could feel his body vibrating with energy, energy that sought an outlet.
But there is no outlet…
Gunner realized there was no way out, just as his blood heated like a pot of boiling lobsters. He longed to move, to speak. But he could not.
Why can’t I move?
A loud thud drew his attention once more as reality sunk in.
All the voices clamored over one another to be heard, but yet her voice was clear as a bell.
“Fuck!” she cursed.
So Little Miss Stick Up Her Ass isn’t as proper as she seems.
“It’s okay, Cate; just breathe…” a woman said, her voice cautious and calming. As if she were trying to soothe an angry child.
“I am breathing!” The woman... Cate… snaps.
“I would suggest…” a man’s voice echoed closely, and Gunner could feel slight vibrations beneath him.
“I did not ask for your opinion. I did not ask you to come with me in this stupid dilapidated piece of shit van!” Another thud sounded.
“It’s not like it’s the first time you’ve broken down,” the soothing woman said.
Gunner could almost feel a burning in his palm, and he attempted to flex his fingers, trying desperately to move.
The burning intensified, and Gunner could feel a sort of magnetic pull, a sort of instinct he hadn’t felt in all his years. As if his body justknew.
She’s right next to me.
Cate.
Her name is Cate.
“Do you know how to fix a broken down van?” Cate’s voice did not waver but he could hear the anxiety in it.
“Do I look like I dabble in automotive engineering?” The man snickered.
“Hades…” Gunner heard the annoyance in her voice, but his attention was pulled as his palm heated once more.
