“I agree that Lydia Lovelace’s books are probably not appropriate for someone your daughter’s age,” Artemis conceded. “And I understand your frustration and concern. I do sincerely hope that you can find out who’s been secretly corresponding with Lady Celeste and attempting to take advantage of her. It’s not right. He must be the worst kind of scoundrel.”
“Yes.” Dominic’s wide shoulders rose and fell with a heavy sigh. “Now, enough about my familial woes. You have delivered on your part of the bargain, my dear Artemis, and I must now endeavor to fulfill mine.” He leaned forward, his bare forearms resting on his muscular thighs. “You’ll be pleased to hear that my sister, Horatia, has agreed to throw a masked ball in a week’s time at Northam House. Given the short notice, and my much maligned reputation, the guest list won’t be a mile long, but”—he caught her gaze—“you, along with your aunt, your sister, and your two coconspirators, Miss Bertram and Miss Delaney, and their respective chaperones, are definitely on that list. Indeed, the invitations are being sent out as we speak. Your ruination is imminent.”
“Oh…” Artemis smiled. “That’s wonderful. Thank you to you and your sister. I’m most grateful.”
“No, I should be thanking you, Artemis.” Dominic’s mouth curved with a devilish grin. “It’s not every day a man is invited to take part in a debauching.”
“I’m glad that you trust me. That you’re not concerned that something might go wrong.”
“Hmmm.” Dominic frowned. “Actually, I would be lying if I didn’t own that I have some niggling reservations. Not about my involvement—that’s assured—but what the ramifications might be for you if the worst should happen and worddoesget out that you’ve been compromised, and there’s no proposal in the offing. I have firsthand experience of how cruel and unforgiving society can be. That being said”—his smile returned—“I respect your decision to do what you think you need to. I’m certain that you and your friends’ planning has been meticulous.”
Artemis gave an emphatic nod. “It has.”
“Good. And of course”—Dominic’s smile grew wider—“once you part ways with your aunt, you’ll be free to start your college. In fact, you’ll be able do whatever you like, whenever you like.”
With me.The words were unspoken, but no doubt that’s exactly what the Duke of Dartmoor was thinking. Because it was precisely what Artemis was thinking as well. At least until she secured the funding to start her college.
She could hardly wait for Lady Northam’s masked ball.
