He offered me a glass of water to take the pills, and then he stood up. “Okay, all done. You might need someone to drive you home though. Oh, and if you take anything stronger, don’t drink with it.”

I groaned. “I’d kill for a fucking drink right now.”

Doc Jeffrey turned to the rest of the people in the room. “Now, if you guys could try punching someone else for a few days, I’d appreciate it. I do have other patients, you know.”

He left, and I really wanted to go with him. I didn’t want to stay here with this sick bunch of fucking monsters.

Cass came over, as I tried to struggle up from laying on my back, my t-shirt still rolled up to my neck.

“Here, let me-”

“In a fucking pig’s eye!” One of the brothers roared, smoothly moving Cass aside, and leaning over to offer me a hand. I stared at it. “Is that the hand that did this to me?”

He snorted. “No. But you’re not touching Cass, so accept my help, or you’ll have to crawl out of here.”

Fuck it. I let him haul me up into a sitting position, thankful that his strength was on my side.

“Jesus fuck.” I hissed, as I leaned back against the back of the seat.

Seb leaned over me then, offering a glass of scotch. “Here, bruv. Look, obviously I didn’t mean to do so much damage to you. I just don’t like Cass being upset. You should know that she’s made it clear how angry she is with me, and later on I plan to completely disregard that, and fuck her anyway.”

I took the glass, and necked the entire damn thing in a few gulps.

“You people are deranged.”

Seb shrugged. “But we’re the best people to have on your side, mate. Remember that.”

Even frowning took too much effort right now. “Are you fucking serious? This is you being ‘on my side’? What the fuck happens to people who aren’t on your side?”

He smirked at me. “They die, Teller.”

My god. How did I end up here?

“When you’re ready, Adam, I’ll drive you home.” Marco said, from the bar area.

“I have my car.” I said, frustrated, because everything seemed to be out of my control right now.

Lenore waved a hand. “I’m driving that back for you. It’s all sorted. Just have another drink, and we’ll take you back.”

I stared at the empty glass in my hand, then looked around.

“Oh for fuck’s sake.” Seb snatched the glass, and strode over to the bar, refilling it.

“Here. So don’t say I never gave you anything.”

“Nope. Can’t say that. You nearly gave me a punctured lung. Out of the kindness of your heart.”

He snorted. “Only nearly, mate. I’ll try harder next time.”

Marco driving me home was a new level of awkward for me. He insisted on Lenore driving in front of him, so he could make sure she was safe, and I wasn’t sure he was entirely happy with being around me at all either.

“Thanks for this.” I finally muttered, wishing the doc had given me stronger pills.

Marco grunted in response.

“I’m sure you had better things to do.” I added, because the more he stayed silent, the harder I’d find it not to talk.

“I mean, you guys have a life, and don’t exist to help me out, that’s for sure.”
