“I’ll back you on this, but don’t get Lenore involved. She’s been through enough. She’s doing better, and it’s going to fucking stay that way. Understood?”
I stood up, pushing my coffee aside. “Yeah. Got it. Thanks a bunch, Marco. Really, you’re always a fucking pleasure to talk to. Between you, and those asshole bosses of yours, I’ve spent the whole fucking day being threatened, and snarled at. Don’t get me wrong. It makes me hard, it really does…”
Marco laughed. “You’re a bigger prick than you realise. And by the way… they’re not my asshole bosses. They’re OUR asshole bosses. Where are you at with this right now?”
I stopped on my way to the door. “I met the dad and tried to get hired. He sent me packing, but he has my card. I don’t know what else to do to get him to consider me.”
I turned to look at him suddenly. “References. He asked for references. Proof that I’m good at what I do.”
Marco nodded. “I’ll speak to Nige. Get some testimonials added to your little website. And I’ll send over something in the hour. Use it to get what you need. I’ll put you in touch with Nige too. He can get you details of where this guy is staying, stuff like that.”
I frowned at him. “What the fuck do you people even need me for? This Nige guy can clearly do everything I can, and more. I’m just wasted resources.”
Marco glanced at the door, as we heard a car pulling up onto the drive. Better not hit my bike.
“Nige is, uh… reluctant to leave his place. We clearly need boots on the ground, Adam. That’s you. I’ll have Nige call you, and I’ll make sure you have some nice references to show this guy. My advice would be to get the job done. And for fuck’s sake, don’t hold off on updating the Bennetts. Not unless you want them on your doorstep. They get really pissed off when that happens.”
I shuddered, looking at the front door as I heard it unlock, and then Lenore appeared. She looked great. I mean, I prefer my women to be a little more diminutive, and needy, but I could appreciate her.
Marco cleared his throat.
“About fucking time you got back, sweetheart. I was going to start without you.” Ugh.
I shot him a glare, while she giggled. “With him here? That wasn’t quite what I had in mind, Marco.”
She looked at me appraisingly. “Didn’t know you rode a motorbike. It’s impressive.”
I grinned at her. “That’s what she said.” I saw myself out, before anyone could kick my ass for that. And now to wait for this Nige guy. I remembered where he lived, but also that the place was more secure than a fucking bank. There was no turning up unannounced there. I went home instead.
