“What? I’m sorry, but I have to go, Sammie.”

She smiles, but I’m too damn busy to be polite. “Sure. Go get her, Cowboy.”

I hop into my truck and race to Angel’s apartment. The lights are off and her car isn’t anywhere around, so where did she go? I clench and unclench my fist repeatedly, wondering if she decided to up and leave for good. That’s not going to happen because she’s mine.

I call Boomer and ask for a favor. Minutes later I have the apartment manager giving me a set of keys. It’s fucked up, but I don’t give two shits. When I step inside, I flip on the light switch to see if the apartment is normal. Her things are still there, so I sit down and wait. A message or two from Boomer asking if I’m okay pops through, but everything else is silent.

It’s about midnight when she finally comes home. “Agh,” she screams, pulling out a gun on me.

I’m staring at the end of a barrel and for some reason she fucking looks so sexy that I’m aroused instead of concerned. Still I stick my hands out and try to pacify her. “Calm down. It’s only me. You can put the fucking gun down.”

She lowers it with a huff, holstering it. “What the fuck, Raymond? What are you doing in my apartment?” Her breathing is labored, face flush from the shock and relief that it isn’t some crazy fucker. Well, not a crazy fucker that would hurt her.

“I thought you split town.”

She pauses a minute too long before responding. “I have other assignments, you know. Since you got my cover blown, I had to get a new gig. He isn’t pissed, but it’s not like I can look inconspicuous now.” She’s lying to me. If she thinks she can continue being a PI she’s mistaken because she’s not very good at bluffing. Angel’s bullshitting me, but it isn’t working.

I close the distance and then cover her soft cheeks with my palms. God, it feels incredible to touch her. I tap the tip of her nose and shake my head. “Sorry, but you’re not very sneaky.”

“Whatever. It wasn’t the first time I’d been on your property.” She pulls away from me, slides off her light jacket, and goes to hang it up in the small closet by the door.

Once she has it on the hook, I grab her arm and pull her around to me. “And yet you’re complaining when you are the one who started it.”

She lifts her chin, scoffing while giving me a glare that only makes her hotter. “I started it? What are we five? Do you want to start pulling hair?”

I grip her hair, holding it in my fist, but I don’t tug. “Fuck yeah, but once I start we won’t be stopping until we’re both completely spent. Now, get some sleep. I need to head home since my day starts in five hours. I expect to see you around. Don’t go running away because I’ll find you.” Releasing my hold on her satiny, silky hair, I step away from her and move to the door.

“Fine. Don’t break into my apartment again. Just call me next time.”

I wink and pat her on the ass before leaving.

I have a long day ahead of me and unfortunately that leaves me away from my beautiful Angel. It’s grueling work, but it’s nothing to be worrying about her.

“Jefe, where you off to in such a hurry?”

“To see my girl.” I wink at him and rush down to my pickup like I’m being chased.

I head over to her apartment as soon as I finish my work for the day.

“Come on in,” she says, opening the door the second I ring the bell.

“How did you know I was here?”

“I happened to be looking out the window when you pulled up.”

“Happened to be? Were you waiting for me?’

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yep. So what brings you here?”

“You’ve been hiding from me and you know damn well I was coming back.”

My words are interrupted by the doorbell. A low growl builds in my chest and then I see her walk to the door with a hand of cash. “Thank you.” She turns to me, holding up a bag, and then says, “My dinner. Would you like to join me?”

“Sure. I like food from the pizza place.”

“Good. Come sit down and help me finish this. I always order way more than I plan on eating because I like variety.”

I help her set up some plates and a drink for each of us. “So what are your plans after you finish up this gig?”

“If I told you, I’d have to kill you.” She winks at me before sauntering over to the couch in a pair of leggings and a plain gray tee.

“I’ll get it out of you one way or another.”
