“She deserves more than this.”

“Watch your tone. You’ve been like a son to me, but don’t forget your place. My daughter is not your concern.”

“Oh, because she’s yours? You’re prostituting your daughter to save your fucking ass, Nate. I can see Donovan putting her up to this, but you?”

“Leave now and go cool down. I will deal with you later.”

Breckin scoffs, tucking his gun into the waistband of his joggers. His long angry strides have him leaving the room in a second. “Cortes, go make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid.”

“You mean besides this?” I quip.

Donovan and dad shoot me sharp looks, warning me to shut the fuck up. I giggle and wait for Dad to get on with the rest of this miserable meeting.

The door to my father’s office was slightly open, and two shadows moved on the

“Malia has a duty as a

wife, not a soldier, Nathaniel.” My mother’s disgusted tone as she said my name

summed up her thoughts on me.

“We are not discussing

this, Tawny. She is our daughter.”

It’s no surprise my

mother is still doing what she can to get rid of me. I’m a threat to her. She’s
