The street is dead, not a soul wandering outside the building at this time of night. An overly tall man stands in the hallway, checking his phone. He’s shielded enough by the decorative plant to get a good look at him, but I don’t miss how he sneaks subtle glances at Mila. I look around to make sure someone else is inside to watch her. I’m not above walking her ass straight to her door.

In reception, a security guard sits behind his desk, staring off into nothing, clearly bored out of his mind. I’m a big guy, but the man eyeing Mila is taller than I am. Something doesn’t sit well in my stomach when I notice it, and I can't say whether it’s from the potential threat of this man’s intentions or the fact I can’t stand his attention on her.

“Mila, wait.”

Mila groans and lowers her head in annoyance before turning her green glare on me. I’ve already become too familiar with that glare, considering I’ve known her for such a short amount of time.

I don’t know why I followed her to the door. Her constant rejection pisses me off as it pulls me in. I realize I didn’t introduce myself either time we met tonight.

“My name is Liam.”

Indifference bubbles behind Mila’s eyes, and I know she couldn’t care less.

Maybe the alcohol leaving my system makes me feel like I should show her I’m capable of simple human decency, that I’m not just the wounded dickhead she met at the club.

But who am I kidding? There’s not much decency in me unless I’m trying to get someone in bed. Is that an ulterior motive? Absolutely. But I don’t want her to leave me tonight thinking less of me.

The fact that I care what she thinks scares the shit out of me.
