“Levi seems to be adjusting,” I said, wanting to fill the empty space.
“Yeah, he is. I keep waiting for him to ask about seeing his mom, but so far, he hasn’t. I don’t know if it’s because he’s too distracted by all the new things or he doesn’t actually miss her. I hope I made the right call, and he doesn’t hate me someday.”
I turned, taking his arms in mine. “Hey, none of that. You did what you had to. I didn’t know how to make that decision for you at the time, but I can see you made the right choice now. With Jude,” I swallowed, the words not willing to leave my mouth, “I can see that I’d do anything to keep him safe. So, I get it. I don’t begrudge you the choice you had to make, and I know it wasn’t out of spite. You’re not that person. So, yes, if Levi were to ever learn the truth, he’d forgive you. Has there been any word yet on her?”
He shook his head, his shoulders relaxing. “Kenneth has officially reported her missing. A warrant was also issued when she didn’t show up for her mandated court hearing. So, it’s only a matter of time.”
“One less problem to worry about. Speaking of exes,” I said, sighing as I rubbed my forehead. “Shit, we need to figure something out with Brian soon. We can’t keep him locked up forever.”
“I don’t know. I think Atticus could,” Monroe laughed, pulling me back toward the direction of my room. As I changed and got dressed for our plans tonight, I had to keep focused on what was ahead.
If everything went according to plan, Jude would be back with us tonight. I didn’t know what condition he’d be in, but I had to pray that he’d be okay. My brain wouldn’t let me consider any other outcome.
I was worried if he wasn’t, that nothing of me would survive, and my darkness would take over, wiping all traces of light from me.
It wasn’t a situation I wanted to test. Jude needed to be safe, for all of our sakes.
