“Yeah, me too,” Wells said, snuggling closer to her. I knew his intention was to have some alone time. I saw as she blushed, also picking up on his reason.
“Nope. You’re gonna want to come,” I said, pausing, “in this store.” I looked over at them, winking. They looked between themselves and then glanced out the window as we rolled to a stop at our destination.
The Right Spotsign glowed brightly against the darkening sky. Opening the door, I held it for them both. Loren and Wells looked up at the sign and the blacked-out windows, trying to piece it together.
“This seems suspicious,” Loren whispered. I grabbed her hand, smiling the whole time as I walked toward the door. Hitting the buzzer, I waited for them to ask for our name and password.
“Mascro party. Backdoor.”
“Good evening, Mr. Mascro. We look forward to serving your party this evening.”
The door buzzed open, and we stepped in. The swanky storefront was decked out in dark purple velvet with gold accents. When Madame Emma walked out, Loren slapped my arm, turning to me.
“Why do I feel like I’m being set up for something?” she asked.
Before I could answer, Madame Emma greeted us.
“Mr. Nicolai, how nice to see you again. I’d kiss you in greeting, but I hear congratulations are in order?” She smiled, looking between Loren and me.
“All three of us,” I said, winking.
“Apologies, congrats to all of you. Thank you for visiting our establishment. We look forward to serving you today. Is there anything, in particular, you’re looking for?”
“Yes, actually.” I turned, looking at the two next to me. Their faces were both filled with apprehension and curiosity. “I believe we’re in the market for two backdoor diamonds.”
