He shook his head. “I have no idea about that. I really can’t say.”

Owen looked disappointed. May, however, was ready to move onto her plan B. She’d guessed they might get nothing from the lawyer, but it had still been worth asking.

In fact, now it was even more important to keep digging, because the fact the lawyer wasn’t talking meant there were things he didn’t want them to know about.

She checked her watch. Listening, she heard footsteps and the jingle of keys from beyond the door.

May got up quickly.

“Thank you so much for your time,” she told the attorney. “I appreciate your help.”

He nodded gravely.

“Sorry I couldn’t have been of more help to you in such a tragic situation. I’m going to call Mr. Reed immediately and give him our condolences.”

He watched as the two of them left. May closed the door behind him.

“Well, that was a real pity,” Owen muttered as they headed past the now empty reception desk. “I’m sure he knew more, but there was no way he was going to tell. Now we’ll never find out.”

May shook her head.

“There’s another way we can find out, if we’re quick. Follow me.”

Instead of walking out of the grand front entrance, she took the stairs that led down to the basement parking lot.

There, if she hurried, she hoped she would find the source she needed.
