"No," May said. Not wanting to arouse her suspicions, she said, "We're just headed to the cabin at the end of this road."

The woman tilted her head.

"You're going the wrong way, I think. Down there, the only place you'll get to is Edgar Boone's house, and he does not like strangers."

May decided this woman might know more.

"Edgar Boone?" she asked.

"Yes. He's in the cabin at the end of this path. He's not right in the head. Hasn't been, ever since his eighteen-year-old daughter drowned out on the lake. That was thirty years ago, and I can say, he's not the same person anymore. My advice is to turn around now!"

May felt excitement surge within her. Every piece of evidence was pointing toward Edgar Boone as the suspect they were looking for.

Including the loss of his eighteen-year-old daughter. That was highly significant. And the cabin. It was right on the lake, with a perfect view.

She strongly suspected they had found their killer.

"Thank you," May said.

She waited for the neighbor to turn away.

And then, she and Owen made a run for it, sprinting down the path in the direction of the cabin.
