“I’ll have Gloria call Nora,” he angrily says.
“Sorry I’m late, I was in the middle of something when you called,” Porter says, rushing in.
“Middle of having your dick buried in some chick?” Riley asks, wiggling his eyebrows.
We all laugh, but Porter winks. “Fuck yeah.” It makes us laugh harder and the tension is finally lifting.
“So, listen, I was talking to Harper last night,” I begin.
“You better not be telling her club business,” Brooks hisses.
My head jerks to him and I pin him with a glare. “Don’t fucking question my loyalty to this club.”
He gives a hollow laugh, shaking his head.
“Anyfuckingway, she said the one in charge when Kingsley and Dom aren’t around is Thomas. So, I think it’s time we make another appearance at Club Kingsley,” I say, smiling.
“You want to just walk into Club Kingsley?” Brooks questions.
I fold my hands on the table and nod. “We can do that or continue going in circles holding our dicks. As much as I love my dick, I’d rather get Thomas and get some goddamn answers. Plus, you liked the idea when it was yours.”
“I agree with, Z. We’ve been at this for days and nothing is happening. We need to start somewhere,” Alex says.
“We won’t be welcome,” Riley points out.
Brooks nods, in agreement. “It’s a stupid idea. We can’t go in guns drawn with all those innocent people walking around.”
“You act like we’ve never done that,” I say, laughing. “What’s different now? When you suggested it, we all ran and did it.”
I know what’s different. He doesn’t want the answers that I do. If we get Thomas to talk, Brooks will have no choice but to come clean with whatever the fuck he’s hiding. I’m done rolling over for him.
“The difference is that Kingsley wants you dead and he won’t hesitate to kill one of us to get to you,” Brooks hisses.
“I’ve put my life on the line more times than I can count for you, for Enzo, for this entire club. That’s what this brotherhood is about, in case you forgot. We will take a bullet for each other,” I say, grabbing the joint being passed around. “You seem to forget what being in this club is all about, uncle.”
He tries to grab me, but Enzo pulls him back. “I’m so fucking tired of this shit!” Enzo yells. He might be shorter than Brooks, but he’s got him beat with strength. He’s breathing heavily, clearly pissed. He runs his hand through his beard that I notice has a few grays now, pinning me with his angry blue eyes. “Zane, stop with the constant jabs at Brooks, he’s the fucking president of this club whether you like it or not.” He turns his hard eyes to Brooks. “Stop trying to block everything that is tossed around at this table. It gets voted on, like every other decision we make.”
I don’t say anything, because I refuse to stop until Brooks breaks down and tells us the truth.
“Fine,” Brooks growls. “Let’s take a vote. We go to Club Kingsley and grab Thomas.”
Enzo is a yes. It continues around the table, Porter, Riley, Alex, Kace, and me, all yesses. I smile as I stare at Brooks. It’s about to go down dear uncle. I hope you’re ready to have all your lies spilled out for us all.
“We’ll head over there in a few hours,” Brooks says with defeat in his voice. That is until his attention is on me. “You cost me one of my men and I’ll personally make you pay.”
“Threaten me all you fucking want. I’m doing what needs to be done. If you don’t like it, maybe you need to consider the reasons why,” I hiss.
“Let’s go get a drink,” Kace says, pulling my arm.
I don’t take my eyes off Brooks until the door closes behind us. “Fuck,” I yell, punching the wall.
“You need to fucking remember your place, brother. I know we have reason to believe Brooks is up to some dirty shit, but until we have proof, he’s still the goddamn president. You’re digging yourself a grave,” Kace says, running his tongue over his lip ring.
“I know my place in this club. I know that I need to do everything to protect it, protect my brothers, and my girl. I’ll do that at whatever cost, even my uncle’s secrets,” I whisper.
“You good, Z?” Riley asks, interrupting my stare down with Kace.
I turn to him and nod. “Yeah I’m good.”
