Three showers and several bathroom floor moppings later—the drunk-high old guy was finally asleep.
I’d showered, too.
The only problem I had at the moment was a lack of clothing.
I had Wes to thank for that.
After I threw a load of laundry in, I went downstairs to find my backpack.
It wasn’t by the front door where’d I’d left it. Neither was Lexi’s.
I walked through the main level, looking for her.
All I found was a very cold, spotless family room. Every sign of Wes’ bender had been erased.
A white air purifier sat on the coffee table where most of his mess had sat.
I could smell some kind of air freshener that had probably been liberally sprayed everywhere.
But, no wife.
I wandered further around the corner and found a set of stairs that must lead to the basement.
Light glowed up the stairway and a faint melody sounded from below.
I took a chance and walked down to see if my wife was there.
When I turned the corner, I was hit by the scent of coconut and bubble gum.
My two favorites.
Then I saw my wife lying on a pink bed.
The sheets glimmered in the low light of her pink lamp. And she glowed inside of them.
The sheet only came up to her waist, revealing a beautiful, lace nightie.
My fingers itched to pull down the thin straps on her shoulders.
“Sarah McLachlan,” I said, drawing Lexi’s eyes to me, “nice. I haven’t listened to this album in ages.”
“Drawn to the Rhythm” played in the background. I’d always loved the songs on this album. They never grew old, only better.
She lowered her book and I saw—and felt—her eyes travel down my body. She locked her gaze on the white towel around my hips.
“Yeah, I love her voice,” she said, still keeping her eyes below my waist.
I felt myself begin to harden. If I stood here much longer, I’d put on quite a show.
“Me, too.” I looked around and spotted our backpacks beside one of her dressers. “I put a load of laundry in the washer, so I was hunting for my clean clothes.”
She smirked at me. “I stole them.”
I chuckled and stifled a groan. “I see that.” Right about now, I would love to jump into bed with my wife and do all kinds of wonderful things.
